As we race towards the end of the school year we were lucky that the sun shone and we all stayed dry, to enjoy an amazing, action packed sports day. We all thoroughly enjoyed the days events and are already talking about how many stickers and certificates we are going to get next year!
We hope that you all enjoyed the Wild for Art day last week. We all thought it was a roaring success! Pardon the pun.
As we take our last few steps towards the finish line Mrs Wylie and Mrs Lee have said how pleased and proud they are at our enthusiasm for learning. Keep up the good work, we are nearly there!
This week in Maths we have been working on tricky money problems. We have all been using all the skills we have learnt this year to help us solve them and Mrs Wylie and Mrs Lee think we could all have jobs one day working for the Bank of England!
In our English lessons it's all about the Chocolate! We've had a mouth watering time completing our research on where chocolate grows and what country it comes from. We are using the information we have found to make our own non-fiction books. We are very proud of how they are taking shape.
We are so proud of the great resilience the children showed this week whilst completing their SATS. In fact we thought they were so brilliant that we would reward all their hard work with a Picnic created by themselves using skills we have been learning all year. The children worked in groups to follow instructions to make sandwiches and then used their maths skills to accurately weigh ingredients to make cup cakes. Finally we used our English skills to write a set of instructions to make chocolate cornflake cakes. The best bit came that afternoon as we got to eat everything we had made at a Picnic on the field. Thankfully the sun shone on us!
Today we had THE BIG WRITE and we all agreed it was probably one of the best ever. We all became fashion designers and created, in groups, outfits to be worn on a catwalk. We could only use plastic bags and sticky tape and our imaginations! It was a brilliant morning and it inspired us to produce some amazing recounts in our writing.
We have been trying so hard this week to win the B.B. Cup. At the beginning of the week Mrs Wylie and Mrs Lee set us a challenge to win the B.B. Cup. They said that if we got one smiley a day then they would also reward as with some fun in the sun! Mrs Lee also said she would do cartwheel if we achieved this and won the B.B. Cup! Mrs Wylie and Mrs Lee are bursting with pride as this morning we made them so happy when we got a smiley for our dancing, meaning that we had achieved at least one smiley every day. We were rewarded with some time on the adventure playground. We are all now crossing our fingers that we win the B.B. Cup so that we can see Mrs Lee do a cartwheel!
Even though we have only been in school for a fraction of the time this week (pardon the pun!) we have worked twice as hard to complete our work on fractions in our maths lessons.. We hope that when we are sharing with our families and friends we can all do so confidently knowing that everyone has and equal share!
In our writing we have been extending our sentences using more conjunctions. We have been trying really hard to focus on making or sentences brilliant by making sure we have used the correct punctuation and used our phonic knowledge to spell words correctly. For our homework this week we are going to complete a sheet that reinforces all our skills. Have a good weekend Class 2. Now that the sun is shining we can really let our brilliance shine on through!
We are so proud of the way you have applied yourselves this week. In maths we tackled some difficult and challenging subtraction problems using a number line and then in our writing we learnt how to use conjunctions successfully but the hard work didn't finish there. On Thursday we had our Brilliance assembly and shone our way through. We hope that all the parents who came to share our success with us enjoyed the morning.
Friday finished with a little bit of mystery. When we came into school we were shown a magical doorway in the side of one of our oak trees, that had appeared overnight on the KS2 playground. This surprise event then inspired us to rush back to our classroom and write about what could be behind that door. Mrs Wylie and Mrs Lee loved the enthusiasm that we showed and were impressed that we tried to add what we have learnt this week to our writing. They both think that we can have the day off on Monday to recover! Have a great bank holiday and we will see you all fully recharged on Tuesday morning.
This week the Queen celebrated her 90th Birthday and we had a special assembly to celebrate. Happy Birthday Ma'am.
In our Maths lessons this week we have been learning about inverse operations. At first we found this a bit tricky but Mrs Wylie is very pleased as we all showed great resilience and got there in the end.
In English we have been retelling the story of Little Red Riding Hood and we had a challenge to add questions, statements and commands to our writing. We had great fun doing this and came up with some fantastic work. On Thursday we even got to retell the story and change one of the characters. We had some great ideas. Mrs Wylie and Mrs Lee loved how creative we got when discussing our new characters.
Keep up all the hard work Class 2.
This week you have all been bursting with Brilliance!
Wow, what a busy week we have had! On Tuesday we had a great time learning how to STOMP dance. Mrs Wylie and Mrs Lee were so proud of us all because every one performed their own routines.
All week as part of our science lessons we have been looking at nature and to start it off on Monday afternoon we took a science walk around the school grounds. We have been using what we learnt to help us with our science work but also to make noun phrases in our English lessons.
In our Maths lessons this week we have been looking at measurements and scales, so next time we bake a cake mum, we should all be superstars at measuring accurately!
Today we became engineers and used different materials to construct 3d shapes.
We found some of the materials trickier to use than others, but overall we thought we were very successful.
Science Week is next week! We cannot control our excitement!
We will be celebrating Science week through a theme entitled “Spies.”
Remember what morning your parents/ carers are invited!

Completing missions is thirsty work, so Friends of Wyburns will be providing refreshments, drinks and bacon buns, from 10:15- 11:00am. Please feel free to buy and share a refreshment and complete the remaining missions.
We will then come back into class to continue our learning.
Please be aware this is a weather permitting event. Should there be inclement weather on the day all events will be postponed. This will be posted on the website banner if cancelled.
Fingers crossed for some sunshine!
Lets get Sciency!
Look forward to seeing you there
The fun element to our learning never seems to stop, as today to finish off an amazing week of learning, we had a party to celebrate Funky Monkeys birthday. We all had a brilliant time and enjoyed party games and food. After the party we came back to class to write a recount using adverbs. We are looking forward to sharing these with you.
Miss Milner and Miss Beasley said you were all fantastic.
On Monday we were all very excited because we got to go behind the scenes at Tesco's.
We had great fun being detectives to find out where our fruit and vegetables come from and then we even got to try some healthy snacks.
We have used our experiences at Tesco's to help us write a report.
Mrs Wylie and Mrs lee have been very proud of us as we have been using some amazing adverbs to help make our writing brilliant.
We've been very busy this week getting to know each other and Mrs Lee and myself have been very impressed with the brilliant work that you have achieved. Your stories about The Three Little Pigs were a pleasure to read and your number bond knowledge in maths saw you all tackling some tricky calculations with confidence.
A massive well done Class 2.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Mrs Wylie and Mrs Lee
Wow! How quickly this half term has gone and how well you are now working as a team to show your brilliance. Well done.
Mrs Lee, Mrs Wylie and I are looking forward to seeing your favourite animal habitats when you return to school and we know that you will have lots to tell us about your adventures and places you have seen.
We hope that you have a great half term holiday with plenty of fun and relaxation.
Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 22nd February.

Today the children spent the day taking part in activities to support Safer Internet Day which had the theme of 'Play your part for a better internet.'
The children watched a film clip about Smartie the Penguin who learns how we can make the internet a kinder place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JSHCGcsnrI We discussed how we are all different and how we should celebrate this rather than making unkind comments on the internet. We also discussed information we can share online and information we should not share online.
Class 2 then joined the Share a heart campaign by Making hearts out of our PE equipment and then the children lay down on the floor to make one large heart. Unfortunately we couldn't capture the whole heart even though Mrs Lee climbed to the top of the wall bars! See photographs below of our hearts and Share a heart pledges.

This week our winner was Evie J, closely followed by Amelia and Jessica
The children chose to create their own certificate for one of their peers. See photo below.
This week the children have been listening to different styles of music from Africa. We identified some African instruments by listening to the instrument playing and matching the sound to a picture of the instrument. We were quite good at this although some of the names of the instruments were a little tricky to say!
Next we learned a 'Call and Response' song from West Africa (Ghana), The song is used traditionally to teach children the names of different body parts. Once we knew the song well we sung as a call and response and added a rhythm using the djembes. Ask the children to sing the song to you, music below.
In Science the children have been learning about different body parts, last week the children compared animals and named exterior body parts and this week they put together a human skeleton and named the different parts. Look at the photographs of our posters coming soon.
This week we are learning about fractions. Fractions of shapes and fractions of amounts. Look at our photographs, we even found fractions of sweets!
Ten children reached the top of our Reading Tree this week.

The children chose again to build a lovely lego model together. See photo below.
Today the children designed their own fruit smoothie. First they carried out some research by tasting some commercial smoothies:
kiwi, lime and apple - strawberries and banana - mango and passion fruit
Then the children tried some different fruits to see which was their favourite by making a tally chart.
Finally the children created their own design for a smoothie.
They are going use these designs to make their own smoothie next week.
Today the children came into school and were told about the exciting day planned.
The children spent the day in Thailand starting with a visit to the Rainforest where the children quickly rode the elephants and then thoroughly washed them. It was great fun!
.
Next the children went to the KIngs Palace where they looked around the beautiful rooms having made sure that they had removed their shoes and covered their shoulders out of respect.
Finally the children went to the beach where they swam in the sea and built amazing sandcastles.
It was a great day for everybody, except Chocolate Monkey who missed it, so we decided to send Chocolate Monkey a postcard telling him about our fantastic day out in Thailand.
The children tried very hard to use adventurous vocabulary. See some of our postcards below soon.

Today we looked at the four basic needs of animals. Can you remember what they were?
Look at this beautiful video clip which explains the needs of animals.
After we discovered what the basic needs were we met Ellie the elephant from Thailand.
We then looked at photographs of different places in Thailand and thought about where would be the best place for Ellie to survive, that is the place that would meet all of her basic needs.
In PE we have been listening to music from Africa and beginning to create a simple 8 beat dance routine. You could practice your routines at home so that Mr. Baker will be surprised by your moves. I have added the link to the music clip below so that you can show your parents the routine you have created so far.
This half term we are looking at data, creating, sorting, organising and retrieving it.
We began by looking at dinoasurs and creating fact cards for each one. Some of the children safely searched for additional information about the dinosaurs by using the children's site http://www.kidsdinos.com and recorded what they found on their fact cards.
After this we looked at different ways we could group our fact cards e.g. length, horned, period alive etc.. We found that sorting and grouping the fact cards in different ways helped us to retrieve information easily to answer questions.

In RE this week we are learning how Muslims live. We started by looking at the five rules that Muslims try to live by.
Can you remember them? Check out the video clip below to remind you.
We then looked at pictures of different mosques inside and out.
Can you try the interactive mosque below and place the features of the mosque in the correct places?
Today we looked at our world and discovered the names of the seven continents.
Can you remember and tell your parents the names of these continents? Use the map below to help you.
Some of the children also looked at other maps to identify the names of the oceans.
After discovering the names of the continents we looked at different foods that are traditionally found around the world. We looked at USA, China, Australia, Mexico, Germany, Africa and even the food for animals in the Antarctica. We then tasted some food from Europe. Look at our photographs below.
In science lessons we are looking at habitats. Today we looked at the world and tried to identify areas where we thought different animals might live and then discussed why they lived there and how they had adapted to survive in these habitats.
Don't forget our special USA lunch on Thursday.

Class 2 are all friends and support each other in school.
The children wrote recipes for a 'Friendship potion'.
The children chose a class friend and copied a photograph to draw the other half of their face. They then wrote about what makes their friend special.
We listened to friendship stories and sung friendship songs. The children all had a great time taking part in the activities.
In Science this week the children looked at how animals are suited to their habitats. We focused on Africa and how the animals have adapted to fit the different types of habitat - rainforest / desert / savannah. The children drew one of the habitats and then added animals explaining how the animals are suited to this habitat.
Rainforest
Desert
Savannah
This term our theme is 'A whole new world'. Today we started with a story, based in Africa, called Handa's Surprise. We retold the story using drama and then the children looked and tasted the different fruits that Handa put in her basket. The children looked at a map of the world and then drew the fruit on the country that it came from. Which fruit do you think travelled the furthest to get to England?

Today the children worked in pairs to create a maths board game which they then played with other children in the class. They had to think of an idea/theme for their game and decide on rules for how to play. Ask the children to tell you about their game and maybe you could create one at home together that you could play with your family at Christmas.
We are learning about the role of charities and talked about ways of raising funds for these charities. The children had great fun making cakes to sell to the staff. Watch our slide show below.
Today we made salt dough and then rolled it out and used cutters to make different Christmas shapes. Then we baked them overnight in the oven so that they dried out and became hard. After this we painted them and added a string so that we would be able to hang them on our Christmas trees at home.

Today the children revisited their chosen tree and looked at the changes that had occurred during the changing seasons.
What changes did you notice?
Today we went to the Towngate theatre in Basildon (or Basildonia as it was called by the cast) to see the Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime. The children had a great time and enjoyed watching the scenes unfold, although some children were a bit unsure about the giant (he was rather tall!) However all the children loved Daisy the dancing cow!
Today the children performed their first 'It's a Party' to their parents. It was brilliant, well done KS1. Roll on Thursday for performance number two!

Class 2 were so excited today when a special visitor came to Wyburns. The children visited Santa's magical grotto and spoke with Santa for a few minutes. They even had an extra surprise to find Olaf visiting Santa too!
The children also made Angel Wishes today where they wrote a wish for the world, a wish for their friends/ neighbours and a wish for themselves. I cannot wait to see our wishes hanging in the hall.
Don't forget the class post box for your Christmas cards will be in the classroom from Monday 7th December.
The children are all very excited to be going to the Winter Wonderland today and especially to visit Father Christmas.
We hope you will also come and take part in all the fun.
See you there!
In Science today the children investigated whether it was possible to make an ice cube melt slower or quicker than other ice cubes. They thought of different ways to achieve this:
We found that the ice cubes wrapped in the tin foil and the ones placed on the floor melted faster than the ice cubes wrapped in newspaper, cling film or felt. We think that the wood, plastic, newspaper and felt acted as insulators, stopping the heat energy from getting to the ice cube, whereas the tin foil and floor acted as conductors, allowing the heat energy to reach the ice cube.
The children all had a great time at the Winter Games where they took part in lots of different activities.
First they warmed up together
Then they played football
Followed by basketball
The children then took part in
a throwing activity
and tenni
The children then had a well
earned rest
The final two activities were badminton and ball skills.
Thank you very much for all the costumes that the children have brought into school for our Christmas Production. We are putting the finishing touches to our play and look forward to sharing it with you next week. Please continue to practise the song words with the children. Thank you.
Tuesday 1st December
All year 1 children to arrive at school in their PE kits with black or navy jogging bottoms and jumper. The children will only be away in the morning and therefore can still order a lunch as normal. When children return to school they will change back into their school uniform.
On Monday afternoon the children joined year 3 to create sparkly angel Christmas decorations, ready to decorate Santa's Grotto on Friday. All the children worked very hard to make some brilliant angels and enjoyed working with each other.

We discussed Road Safety Rules and re enacted crossing the road following these rules.
We also looked at different places where it would be safe / unsafe to cross the road.
We then looked at maps of the local area to find a safe route for Chocolate Monkey to travel to Sainsbury's Local. We added symbols to represent a zebra crossing, puffin crossing etc.. onto our maps and drew a key for these symbols.
This years theme for Road Safety Week is 'Drive less, live more!'
See link below that explains the theme for this year.
Wednesday 2nd December KS1 gallery in the school hall from 3:00 - 3:40 where all the children's fantastic 3D London landmark models will be on display.
The children brought home a letter today giving the details of the part they are playing in the Christmas Production. On this letter there are details of any costume items that your child may need. These items need to be in school by Wednesday 2nd December, in a named carrier bag. Please let us know if there are any difficulties providing any of the items.
Thank you
On Tuesday afternoon the children all went to London and had a wonderful time visiting:
Buckingham Palace where they sipped tea and munched on cakes with the Queen,
Wembley Stadium where they cheered and clapped whilst watching a football match.
Tower Bridge where the children strolled along the bridge and then peered over the rail to gaze at the River Thames.
What a wonderful time was had by all whilst brainstorming interesting verbs for our English lesson! We then wrote a postcard to Chocolate Monkey as he had not been able to come to London with us.
In maths this week the children have been learning about measuring length. They have used non standard units ( cubes, bricks, straws etc..) and standard units (centimetres and metres) to measure the length of a variety of objects around the classroom. The children have ordered length by making direct comparisons and by actual measurements. This has enabled the children to identify the longer/shorter, longest/shortest and taller / tallest objects. Some children then worked out the difference between measurements.
After this the children went on to investigate length by solving problems.

The children have been looking at onomatopoeia - words that imitate sounds. First we watched an online firework display and brainstormed all the words we could think of and then the children worked in groups to use these words to write a firework poem. Finally the children investigated our percussion instruments to find the ones that made the most appropriate sound for the onomatopoeia words. We hope you like our poem.
We watched our snowman all day and drew a picture of him every hour to see how he changed. Ask the children what they noticed about the changes that occurred.
Wow! All your 3D models are amazing! You have worked so hard to produce some stunning models and you were able to talk about how you made them and about the landmark itself. Well done!
We put our models out on display and so did Classes 7 and 8 then we all walked around and looked at each others models. They were all fantastic.
Here are class 2's London Landmarks:
It was lovely to see you all again after our weeks holiday and also to see all your great 3D models of different landmarks in London. It was good to hear all the fun and excitement you had making your models. Look out for the pictures on our class page soon.
Wow! How quickly this first half term has gone. You have all settled into Class 2 so well and we know that in the next half term you will show us more of your brilliance.
Mrs Lee and I are really looking forward to seeing your 3D models of London landmarks when you return to school and we know that you will have lots to tell us about your adventures and places you have seen.
We hope that you have a great half term holiday with plenty of fun and relaxation. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 2nd November.

Well done to these children. Who will be the top five children for half term week?
Well done Class 2 for earning 3 smileys this week. Let's see if we can beat this after half term and win the Brilliance Cup. Show everyone your brilliance!
The children evaluated their futuristic fire engines this week. They looked at the following questions:
How their original design compared to their final product?
What was easy to make?
What was difficult to make?
What skills they were good at and what skills they needed to improve?
What would they change/improve if they made the fire engine again?
The children then looked at advertisements for different products and planned their own advertisement that would tell the buyer all about the parts of the fire engine and what those parts were used for. They then recorded the advertisements using the ipad or Hudle tablets.
This week was Book Week and the children looked at Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl.
On Monday the children wrote party invitations to invite each other to Mr Foxes party. On Tuesday they carried out problem solving activities to help Mr Fox and his family and on Thursday they watched the film of Fantastic Mr Fox. A great time was had by all and the children loved hearing the story of Fantastic Mr Fox.
The Book Fair is in school all week and available for the children to buy books after school.
Another strange event was reported at Wyburns Primary School today. On arrival at school the teachers were met with a mysterious sight.
A ladder was coming out of the pond and there was a trail of apples leading away from the pond to the apple tree. The children also saw footprints and a net hanging from the trees.
What had happened here? Who or what had come out of the pond? What did they do and how long did they stay? Did they return to the pond?
These were the questions that the children were asking each other. Everybody agreed that we thought they liked apples!
We returned to the classroom and discussed the children's ideas further and then the children wrote a story about the mysterious creature/animal that came out of the pond.
Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th October, parents are invited to come and have lunch with the children at 12.00pm. See you there.
Congratulations to the following children who reached the top of the Reading Tree this week:

A great time was had by all at the Disco on Friday! Thank you to the Friends of Wyburns for organising this event, the children had a great time dancing and playing with the glow sticks as well as spending their money on refreshments.
Class 2 you all looked awesome in your disco clothes and you displayed
great dance moves!
This afternoon Class 2 looked at who is an online stranger. We watched a clip about Lee and Kim playing a game called Animal Magic and how they found out about strangers.
The children then made up a profile of a boy or girl that they then pretended to be. They worked in pairs and whilst one child hid behind an animal mask the other child asked questions and tried to get them to reveal personal information about their new profile. This showed the children that when they are online it is like talking to someone wearing a mask and we do not know who they really are.
The children also learned, with the help of Super Hero SID, what information was personal information and took part in a quiz to identify this information.
SID's Top Tips
It was lovely to see so many of you at the Talk and Share after school tonight. The children were so excited to be able to show you their work and I know from many of your comments that you were proud of them too. Thank you for sharing with us.
Today the children finished making their fire engines and then painted them. The children have really enjoyed creating their designs and I wonder which will be the closest to a future fire engine? Look at some of their designs below.
Today we made ourselves some bread, just like Thomas Farriner in 1666. We had to ensure that we listened carefully to each instruction whilst identifying both the imperative verbs and the time connectives. The children can't wait to bring the bread home to eat!
Congratulations to Elliott, Khushi, Nathan and Zachary who all reached the top of our Reading Tree. Well done for being such super readers.

Who will be the most active children next week?
For our Big Write today we travelled back in time to 1666 and imagined we woke up on the morning when the Great Fire of London started. First we heard that a fire had destroyed the bakery and although we were sad for Thomas Farriner we were not too concerned . Suddenly it was announced that the wind was getting stronger and stronger and that the fire was on its way to our street. We thought about our favourite possessions and decided to bury them in a box to keep them safe from the fire.
Today we had our celebration of Harvest with our guest Rev. Phil. Ho told us about the work his church has been involved with in Ethiopia. Thank you very much for all the gifts that the children have brought into school, they were gratefully received and will go towards helping poor families in Rayleigh.
The children have brought home their spellings today. The purple spelling book must be back in school on Thursday (8th October) for their spelling test and for their new spellings to be stuck in. If your child forgets to bring their spelling book home you can click on the spelling star above to see a copy of their spellings.
There is a very exciting opportunity to participate in our Multi – skills after school club. The activity will be different for each week including rugby, football, basketball and dodgeball. Please ring Tarkan on 07956 254052 for more information and to book your slot.
Today we had great fun being firemen! We explored different materials to see which would be the best for holding water so that we could put the fire out. We found that the plastic was waterproof but the cardboard, crepe paper and fabric were not waterproof.
Congratulation to the following children who won positions in the recent school elections:
Isabel and Nathan were elected to represent Class 2 as Junior Governors.
Sonny was elected to represent Class 2 as a Sports Leader.
Thank you to all our nominees it was a very close election.
Today the children were surprised to see some special visitors in school. Firemen Darren, Lee, Mark and Adam came to see the children in their fire engine. They tested the children's knowledge of the Great Fire of London, told us about their job, the clothes they wore and the equipment they used both on and off the fire engine. The children had a great morning and were so excited to be able to go into the fire engine itself too!
This homework is due back in school on Friday 2nd October.
This week the children will be investigating which materials are waterproof. We will become fireman and explore which buckets hold the most water. Please could you provide a pair of wellies and leave them at school for the whole week. Thank you.
This Friday Rev Phil will be coming into school for our Harvest Festival Assembly.
The children have been busy learning some Harvest songs.

The Eco Race continues for 3 weeks so if you can try to earn your 5 points each day by walking, scooting or cycling to school, that would be great. Any bikes or scooters can be brought through the gate in the morning.

We have had an exciting week learning about the Great Fire of London.
We have re-enacted the story,
sequenced the events
and used our senses to think of some amazing adjectives to describe the fire.
We sorted pictures of London into Past London and Present day London and compared houses and buildings, people's jobs, transport and the street at night.
On Wednesday the children had the exciting opportunity to visit our school library. Each child chose a library book to take home. The children will have the opportunity to change this book every Wednesday.
On Friday the children thought about the job of an Eco Councillor and the children discussed the qualities an Eco Councillor would need. The children then put their name forward if they wanted to be considred for this job and the class then voted for who they wanted to be our Class 2 Eco councillors.
The successful children voted to represent Class 2 were:
Teddy and Iris
This week in computing the children have begun basic touch typing skills and started with learning about the home keys on the keyboard and which fingers to use for which keys.
