Safeguarding Curriculum
Safeguarding at Wyburns Primary School
Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do at Wyburns Primary School. We place great importance on creating opportunities within our curriculum for children to learn about safeguarding and personal safety.
Our broad and inclusive curriculum enables pupils to experience life in all its diversity, acquire knowledge, skills, and understanding that positively impact their personal development, behaviour, and welfare, and equips every child with the skills they need for personal safeguarding.
Our PSHE curriculum covers all areas of safeguarding across different strands, with some topics explored in greater detail. We ensure sensitive subjects are taught at an age-appropriate level, and where urgent needs arise, learning can be delivered in small groups or one-to-one. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about safeguarding matters, their own physical and mental well-being, and are given space to ask questions and express their thoughts.
Across the curriculum, children explore values, personal rights, responsibilities, and equal opportunities, helping to develop moral concepts that support safeguarding, promote British values, and prevent radicalisation and extremism. Practical safeguarding opportunities are planned into school life, including:
-
Road and rail safety (including school visits, bikeability, and community policing)
-
Poolside and water safety through swimming lessons
-
Fire safety awareness, including visits from the local fire service
-
Visits from medical staff and local charities
-
Support from voluntary sector services, particularly around safe transition to secondary school
-
Plays, shows, and workshops addressing exploitation, online safety, and personal safety
-
Safe use of technology, including password security and privacy settings
We provide a safe and open learning environment where pupils feel confident to express their views, seek help, and support others. Promoting equality of opportunity and diversity for pupils and staff helps prevent any form of discriminatory behaviour. Children are encouraged to challenge prejudice, make positive choices, and develop good learning behaviours.
Assembly times, circle times, and class discussions are used to explore safeguarding themes, including anti-bullying (including cyberbullying), British values, and respect in a multi-faith society. Pupils learn about diversity, the role of women in society, different family groups, and the experiences of people beyond their immediate community.
Throughout the curriculum, opportunities are planned to promote equality and respect for all faiths (and those with none), races, genders, ages, disabilities, and sexual orientations. At the start of each school year, we reaffirm our school values, expectations, and rules for being part of Team Wyburns, setting the tone for a safe, inclusive, and supportive year.
