Physical Education and Sport at Wyburns Primary School

At Wyburns, PE is a highly valued and continually evolving part of our curriculum. We are proud holders of the School Games Silver Kitemark and the Youth Sport Trust Gold Quality Mark, and we are striving toward the prestigious Platinum Award.

All children receive a minimum of two hours of PE each week as part of their curriculum. In addition, a wide variety of after-school clubs run Monday to Friday, catering to all age groups. Pupils also benefit from working with specialist sports coaches, enhancing their skills and experiences. Key Stage 2 children attend swimming lessons at a local pool as part of their PE provision.

These clubs are led by our dedicated teaching staff and trusted external providers, including Jack of All Sports (JOAS) and Elite Sports Coaching, who provide expert support and specialist coaching.

We have a long-standing relationship with Southend United, giving pupils access to exclusive programmes, and strong partnerships with:

  • Garons Park Golf Club

  • Rayleigh Tennis Club

  • Rayleigh Town Cricket Club

  • Rochford & District Swimming Club

  • Clements Hall

  • Deanes School Sports Partnership

  • Jack of All Sports (JOAS)

These links allow children to explore and pursue a wide range of sports beyond the school grounds.

Competitions and Events

Our pupils regularly participate in inter-school competitions such as:

  • Sportshall Athletics

  • Mini-Tennis

  • Tri-Golf

  • Archery

  • Football

  • Mountain Biking

  • Basketball

  • Cross Country

  • Rounders

Younger pupils also take part in seasonal sports festivals, including the Winter and Summer Games and KS1 Tennis. Through the Castle Point and Rochford School Sports Partnership (CPRSSP), we aim to enter as many competitions as possible, giving every child the chance to represent the school.

We also have a strong link with the Essex FA, allowing pupils to compete in Level 3 football cup competitions, and participate in local football and netball leagues as well as the annual District Sports event at Garons Park Sports Centre – a highlight of our sporting calendar.

Through our use of Sport Premium funding and supportive partnerships with JOAS and Deanes School, we continue to develop PE, improve facilities, and provide enriching sporting opportunities for every pupil at Wyburns.

Sports Premium Funding for 2025-2026

Wyburns Primary School receives Sports Premium funding from the government to enhance the quality of physical education (PE) and sport across the school. For the 2025-2026 academic year, we will receive a grant of £17,000 to support the delivery of high-quality PE and sport activities for all pupils. This funding allows us to improve physical education, promote healthy lifestyles, and provide diverse sporting opportunities, both in the curriculum and through extracurricular programs.

We are committed to using the Sports Premium to increase participation in physical activity, enhance pupils' skills, and ensure that all children have access to engaging and inclusive sports opportunities. For more information on how this funding will be allocated, please see our Sports Premium Report on the School Policies page.
