Year 5 have made an exciting start to the term with lots of enthusiastic learning across English, Maths and History. In English, the children have been inspired by the legendary tale of Beowulf, using the story to develop their descriptive writing skills. They have explored how authors create atmosphere and tension through ambitious vocabulary, expanded noun phrases, similes and powerful verbs. The children particularly enjoyed describing the terrifying arrival of Grendel and the heroic battles, carefully crafting their own dramatic scenes to engage the reader and bring the action vividly to life.

In Maths, Year 5 have been working hard on fractions, focusing on comparing and ordering both unit and non-unit fractions. They have used practical resources, visual models and reasoning activities to deepen their understanding and explain their mathematical thinking clearly. The children have shown great resilience when tackling more challenging problems and have become increasingly confident in recognising equivalent fractions and justifying their answers.

Our new History topic on the Anglo-Saxons has also captured the children’s imagination. They have begun exploring who the Anglo-Saxons were, why they invaded Britain and how they shaped the country we know today. We have linked this learning to our local area by discovering how Essex is steeped in Anglo-Saxon history, from place names to settlements and archaeological finds. The children have been fascinated to learn how much evidence of the past can still be seen around us and are excited to continue uncovering the rich history of where we live.
