What a wonderful way to finish Summer 1 in Maple Class!
In Maths, we have been learning how to convert between units of measure. We discovered that the Latin prefix 'kilo' means one thousand, helping us understand why there are 1,000 metres in a kilometre and 1,000 grams in a kilogram. The children used their knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000 to support their conversions and tackle a range of reasoning challenges. We were also fascinated to learn that 5 miles is approximately equal to 8 kilometres, helping us make connections between different measurement systems.
In English, we became historians and critical thinkers as we wrote discussion texts exploring the question: Were the Vikings really barbaric, or is this view biased? The children carefully considered evidence from different perspectives before presenting balanced arguments and reaching their own conclusions.
Our Geography lessons took us on a journey around the world as we investigated deserts across different continents. Many of the children were convinced that the Sahara Desert would be the largest, so there was great surprise when they discovered that Antarctica is actually the world's largest desert due to its extremely low levels of precipitation!
In Art, we have been busy creating a special project that will be displayed around Rayleigh. The children have worked incredibly hard on their designs, and we are excited for the local community to see the finished pieces in the coming weeks.
This brings an end to a fantastic half-term filled with hard work, curiosity and creativity. We hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable break, and we look forward to welcoming the children back to Maple Class on Monday 8th June for an exciting Summer 2. 🌟
