Essex Year of Reading

On Thursday 16 June 2022, we welcomed Michael Rosen, one of Britain’s best loved writers and performance poets, for an online event as part of the Essex Year of Reading. Michael performed some of his most famous poems and discussed the importance of play and talk in language development in young children. For anyone who was unable to watch live, the event can now be viewed online.

I’m also pleased to share that the next Essex Year of Reading challenge will launch shortly. The Reading in Unusual Places challenge is calling for residents to share a photo of themselves, a family member or friend, reading in weird and wonderful places across the county. The challenge is open to children, young people and adults. Ideas might include reading under a tree, whilst relaxing on the beach or by an outstanding landmark, such as Colchester Castle or Frinton beach.

Children could dress-up as a monkey, whilst reading a book on animals at the Zoo or get the whole family involved and dress up as characters from their favourite book at the beach. Participants could also share a picture of themselves reading while doing their favourite hobby.

The challenge starts on Monday 4 July 2022 and will end on Friday 2 September 2022. To enter, simply share your picture to Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #ReadingInUnusualPlaces, or tag @EssexCountyCouncil on Facebook.

Please remember to practise spellings, login to Sumdog, Myon and TTRS too.
